TAMPA, Florida -- The Wichita Wings are planting their flag in the Midwest Division early, which considering the quality of teams there, is a great thing for the Orange Army.

While the Wings are 3-0, and have played all their games so far at the Heartland Credit Union Arena in suburban Wichita, they have been impressive for first-year coach LaBaron Hollimon after weekend sweep of the visiting Omaha Kings highlighting Week 5 Major Arena Soccer League 2 action.

They sit atop the Midwest with nine points, one more than the also unbeaten Iowa Raptors who are 3-0, but have one of their wins in overtime. And that doesn't even take into account the Iowa Demon Hawks, who lost in last season MASL 2 finals in a double-overtime thriller, who will start their regular season January 16 in Omaha.

And, oh by the way, the next game for both the Wings and Raptors comes January 17 in what will be an early season top-of-the-table battle in Wichita. And in fact, each of their next three games will be against each other, with Wichita set for a weekend doubleheader Jan. 31 and February 1 in Cedar Rapids.

Also in Week Five, the OKC Certified Lions continue to set the pace in the West with an 11-4 win over the Texas Spurs, the Lions third straight to open 2025-26.

Week 6 offers more debuts, including long awaited season openers for Mexico City and The Turlock Cal Express. Those two will tangle in Turlock, and Mexico City will play in California twice this weekend as they will also provide the opposition for the northern California based Soccer Central Black Hawks in their first-ever MASL 2 game Saturday. And in an early season showdown, the OKC Certified Lions will travel south to meet the talent-laden Soles de Sonora.
