Texas Spurs, under the direction of MASL vet Ed Puskarich, will debut this fall
TAMPA, Florida – The newest team in Major Arena Soccer League 2 brings with it a wealth of
experience on and off the floor with a true “who's who” of Lone Star state soccer at the helm.
The Texas Spurs will join the MASL 2 South Division this season, playing in Allen, Texas. As a soccer club, the Spurs were brought to life more than a quarter-century ago by Eddie Puskarich, who will be the owner and coach of the Spurs venture into the indoor game.
Puskarich is no stranger to the MASL family, or the outdoor game as well, having played, coached and officiated at about every imaginable level of soccer. Most recently, he was the head coach of the MASL Dallas Sidekicks in 2023-24 and the Texas Outlaws in 2024-25.
“There's a lot of soccer talent in the Dallas area, and we wanted a place for our better players to hone their skills, and what better way than to use the MASL 2 model to keep our game alive in Dallas,” said Puskarich, who said he expects at least a few former Texas Outlaws and Dallas Sidekicks to find their way onto the Spurs roster. “This will allow them to continue to play at a high level and not have to move. The competition we know is very good and I think it's going to be a good experience for us. I'm excited about it.”
He founded the Spurs organization in 1999, which has had through the years teams in the UPSL and WPSL for which he served as head coach. Since 1997 he has been a professional player evaluator and scout for Major League Soccer, and since 2017 has served as an MLS Video Assistant Referee. His career indoors began in 1984 in the American Indoor Soccer Association which evolved into the National Professional Soccer League.
Puskarich – who played collegiately at Southern Methodist University – had a long and
productive pro career in the indoor game, appearing in some 650 games over 19 years as a player including time with the Los Angeles Lazers, Milwaukee Wave, Chicago Power, Memphis Storm, Dayton Dynamo, Fort Wayne Flames, Columbus Capitals and Houston Dynamo. A native of Plano, Texas, he also spent a season in MLS with the Dallas Burn before a knee injury forced his retirement as an active player. A defender in his indoor career, he scored 74 goals while playing in Columbus, Memphis, Chicago and Milwaukee from 1984 to 1996. He also had 384 blocked shots in that period.
The Spurs nickname, of course, was an easy one for Puskarich to grab a hold of as it pays respect to the Lone Star state's cowboy heritage
“I can't think of a person that is as respected and tireless as Eddie when it comes to his passion for indoor soccer, and soccer at all levels for that matter,” noted MASL 2 Commissioner Chris Economides. “The Spurs have a phenomenal history of success and respect wherever they play and I expect them to be an immediate contender in the South Division with the talent available to them. It's not really possible to overstate how great an addition it is to MASL pyramid, and MASL 2 specifically.”
MASL 2 will kick off its ninth season of high-flying, high-intensity indoor soccer action late this fall. Teams play a 12-game schedule, with a postseason to conclude the 2025-26 season. The Chihuahua Savage II defeated the Iowa Demon Hawks in last season's double-overtime finals to claim its second league championship. More information can be found at www.masl2.com.
