TAMPA, Florida -- Soccer fans in Oklahoma City may or may not believe in Santa Claus, but they sure have a pro indoor soccer team they can believe in, at least if week three in Major Arena Soccer League 2 is any indication.
The OKC Certified Lions christened the brand new OG&E Coliseum -- a 4,500 seat arena in downtown Oklahoma City that opened earlier this year -- with a Major Arena Soccer league doubleheader Saturday, and provided one of the major surprises of the season to date in defeating Soles de Sonora, 8-4.
Sonora's roster is loaded with veteran MASL players, and not just players, but some of the greatest talent in the current era of the sport including Franck Tayou, Cristhian Segura and several others. But OKC wasn't intimidated, and built a comfortable 7-2 lead by early in the fourth -- if any lead in indoor soccer can be comfortable, that is. (The OKC Certifield Lions MASL 3 team followed that with a 15-4 win over Austin's The Bold Dream FC, www.masl3.com).
It wasn't the only highlight of the weekend as the Iowa Raptors invaded Baxter Arena in Omaha, and for a second straight start, posted a one goal win, this one in overtime. And Sonora was able to manage a weekend split of it's swing through the Midwest with an 8-2 win over the Texas Spurs in suburban Dallas on Sunday night.
There's plenty of action in store for Week 4 after the Christmas presents have all been opened, including home openers for the iconic Wichita Wings and Spice City FC in Danbury, Connecticut.
