Demon Hawks and Mexico City sweat out close ones, Heat roll, to stay undefeated

TAMPA, Florida -- All three undefeated teams that were in action last weekend in Major Arena Soccer League 2 stayed that way, but for two of them -- the Iowa Demon Hawks and Mexico City -- it wasn't easy.

Harrisburg -- which will have its long awaited home opener this weekend at their 2025-26 home Hersheypark Arena -- had little trouble in moving to 6-0 with an 8-1 win over FC Baltimore 1729, their opponent coming up this Friday. The Heat led 5-0 at intermission, and player/coach Hugo Silva lost his shutout bid late in the fourth. Thiago Frietas continued his torrid scoring pace with two goals and four assists. All six wins have been on the road for Harrisburg, who will play out the rest of their 12-game regular season at home.

Mexico City, in improving to 8-0, got pushed to the limit by Guadalajara, with the Asuncion pulling out an entertaining 10-8 win. It was 3-3 after one and the visiting Mariachis led 5-4 at the half. Mexico City's lead was just 7-6 going to the final 15 minutes. Cristhian Pacheco had a big night with a hat trick. as did Erick Ponce.

The Demon Hawks also got pushed hard, before gutting out a 5-3 win over visiting Omaha. Iowa built a 5-1 third quarter lead, only to see the Kings rally fall short in the fourth. Iowa held a 23-19 edge in shots, and got two goals from Eddie Martinez. A game Sunday between the two was cancelled and both teams agreed to call it forfeit win for Iowa after blizzard warnings were issued for the Des Moines area. Omaha is already in the post season by virtue of being one of the host teams.

There is indeed a fourth perfect team in the league -- the OKC Certified Lions who announced this week their intentions to move the the Major Arena Soccer League -- but they were idle this weekend.

Sonora picked up road wins in Turlock and Watsonville, downing the Express 4-1 on Friday and the Soccer Central Black Hawks on Saturday. Cristobal Vargas lost his bid for a shutout with just over three minutes to play in Turlock. Against the Black Hawks, Alejandro Leyva scored a natural hat trick in the first half to set the pace for Sonora.

United Elite Krajsinik overcame an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the Salisbury Steaks, 7-2. Siidahmed Somow had a big afternoon with three goals and one assist. Spice City also downed Salisbury over the weekend, 19-1.
