Current civil unrest in Mexico leads to postponement of game in Sonora on Saturday
TAMPA, Florida -- Major Arena Soccer League 2 Commissioner Chris Economides has announced that Saturday's game between the OKC Certified Lions and Soles De Sonora in Hermosillo, Mexico, has been postponed out of immediate concern for traveling safely in that country following a high-level drug enforcement action this past weekend which has led to civil unrest there.
The decision was made in consultation with both teams and other officials who agreed that a postponement would be in the interest of all, including players, referees and fans, Economides noted.
"Player and fan safety are always a top priority, so just as we have had to do several times this winter and postpone games due to severe weather causing significant travel concerns, this situation calls for equal caution as well,"" he said.
No rescheduled date has yet been discussed, with the teams and league looking at several scenarios that could potentially play out depending on improving conditions in Mexico.
"We will continue to have constant dialogue with our teams -- and our two other additional MASL 2 teams in Mexico -- who are the best judges of their respective situations at any given time. They are in contact with their local leaders to make sure we can move forward with the safety of all involved at the forefront of each potential decision," he added.
